Introduction: THE FOAM TUK TUK

The SPIRA foam tuk tuk left was first test driven January 19, 2009.

BACKGROUND

It weighs about 137 Kilos (302 pounds) with the engine and electric motor. This is only 23 Kilos (50 pounds) more than the 110cc Yamaha Mio motorcycle I dismantled for the engine and parts. On the first test drive I went 60mph because it felt very stable. Doug and I [175 K (385#)] both fit in comfortably.

It is currently powered now by a 9hp Yamaha engine to get 100 miles/gallon.

The Foam Tuk Tuk is designed to increase safety for both the pedestrian and the passenger. Car design has focused on passenger safety and not the kill rate. Pedestrian, bicycle, and motorcycle fatalities in urban areas need to be considered. Some studies show that about one half the auto accident fatalities are pedestrians in urban areas
